The Shape of Water (2017) Review

Image
I'm going to get straight into it; despite how critically-acclaimed The Shape of Water is, the film has mostly been a disappointment to me. This review contains light spoilers. The Shape of Water is essentially about two individuals who view each other as complete individuals and find solace in each other. Elisa (the main protagonist) is a mute woman who befriends a captured humanoid amphibian man at her workplace, a high-security government laboratory. The humanoid amphibian man, not understanding that Elisa is mute, sees her as any other individual, and not one with a disability. They communicate through sign language, eventually falls in love with each other, and Elisa devises a plan to help him escape. *** Let us first start with the things I liked about this film. Clearly, the visuals and Sally Hawkins' performance are highly commendable. The Shape of Water has a peculiar vibe unique to itself due to the incorporation of classical music into somewhat of a...

Scum's Wish Reviews

Image
A.k.a The Show Where Almost Everyone Is a Manipulative Snake ™ This show does not aim to be likable, nor do the characters aim to be likable for the sake of their audience. This show aims to portray emotions as it is: the good, the bad, and the nasty. Personally, the need to even criticize this show feels unnecessary, because the purpose of this show is to carry raw human emotions, and human emotions by itself is subjective and is interpreted differently by every individual. MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS but no major ones. (Trigger warning: I advise against watching this anime if you have had experiences with emotional and/or sexual abuse.) *** Before going through my post, I suggest you first read through this review  for episode one by Anime Feminist ; Amelia Cook managed to put down everything I feel in words better than I ever can. Scum's Wish is not a show for everyone. People who are in healthy, fruitful relationships...

Ajin Ep 1 : FIRST IMPRESSION

Image
Alright. A brief summary. The word 'Ajin' literally translates to 'half-human' , which is what this anime is about; immortal creatures with supernatural abilities. I first learnt about Ajin from a Youtube video promoting new upcoming animes, wherein Boku Dake ga Inai Machi ( ERASED ) was also in it. These two animes caught my attention, and them being seinen earned them extra points. The first thing I noticed (also the first thing that you would notice if you do end up watching this anime) was how......... odd the animation for the characters looked. They seemed as if they were stuck somewhere between two-dimensional and three-dimensional . I generally do not enjoy animes with an animation style I do not agree with, which is a really shallow quality to base an anime on. Do not do it my way, buddy. The characters looked like the simulation in Japanese dance battle games. Like the projection of Hatsune Miku during her live stages. Only Hatsune Miku looks m...

Sakura Trick Ep 1: FIRST IMPRESSION

Image
Here's how it started. I liked Yaoi, so I thought I might enjoy Yuri too. And since this is one of the most famous ones around, I thought why not give it a try? I did.  Didn't really like it. To start off, the two main characters, Haruka and Yuu, are way too underdeveloped for my taste. Considering how terrifyingly new I am to this genre,  I'm in no position to speak. However, as a girl who has liked other girls, this was definitely not how girl love looked nor felt like to me. The two mains did not seem to share romantic feelings for each other, but rather an extremely strong friendship accompanied by a lot of skinship. Homosexuality is a tricky theme to deal with and I want it to be portrayed in the right light, not as a form of fanservice. The amount of fanservice in just the first episode itself can be a turn-off for some people.  There were several close-ups on Haruka's D-cup boobs, which I have no problems with because boobs are great, but they were d...

Noragami Aragoto Reviews

Image
Welcome back, mina-san! How did your Christmas go? To those who aren't familiar with this anime, let me clarify that Noragami Aragato is the sequel to Noragami, with Noragami being season one and Noragami Aragato being season two. For the sake of those who knows nothing about Noragami, here is a short passage on the general concept of the story, but not the plot. This anime centers around Yato, a minor infamous God without a shrine who is poor and has a dark past. In Noragami, most Gods own at least one Regalia (Shinki), a spirit that was named by the God and now belongs to that God. Regalias, when not in battle mood, take on the appearance of humans but transform into different objects when called by their masters. Some transform into weapons like swords and guns, others into every day objects like a paper fan or even a piece of lingerie. ♦  ♦  ♦  ♦  ♦ Before anything else, I would like to first state that this season was at least three times better tha...

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo Reviews

Image
Slight spoilers ahead; if spoilers don't bother you much, this should be pretty safe.  ► Summary ◄ Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo (also known as The Pet Girl of Sakurasou), is about a freshman named Kanda Sorata , who was forced to move out of his school dorm after being caught breaking the rules by keeping a pet cat. The principal gave him two choices: to either get rid of the cat or to move to Sakurasou with it, and he chose the latter. Sakurasou is apparently a separate hostel which houses the more 'troubled' kids of the school, and a lot of negative rumours surround it. Eventually, Sorata moved in and got acquainted with the three existing residents of Sakurasou; Mitaka Jin , a womanizer who keeps several girlfriends at once (some being married), Kamiigusa Misaki , an extremely talented anime-maker who appears to be high on sugar every second of the day, and Akasaka Ryuunosuke , a genius computer geek who develops his own programs and is hardly ever seen leaving his...

Love Live! School Idol Project Review

Image
Spoilers !!! Because I suck. Before we start, this is more of a discussion than a review. After all, Love Live! is one of those animes I have no idea how to review, mostly because I feel so neutral towards it. The only reason why I typed this anime into the search bar in the first place was because I found out that my friend would be cosplaying Umi during Comic Fiesta in December. I thought it would be nice if I could get an insight into how her character is like. Although there was nothing I particularly liked about this anime, I definitely did not dislike it either. Okay, maybe saying there was nothing I liked about it isn't being fair to it. There are still a few things worth mentioning. Firstly, I liked how Love Live didn't happen. I thought I had the whole plot figured out. First they recruit all the members as shown during the opening theme (which they did, the OP is a large spoiler by itself), they practice hard (done that too), join Love Live (did not), th...
