Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo Reviews

Slight spoilers ahead; if spoilers don't bother you much, this should be pretty safe.

► Summary ◄

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo (also known as The Pet Girl of Sakurasou), is about a freshman named Kanda Sorata, who was forced to move out of his school dorm after being caught breaking the rules by keeping a pet cat. The principal gave him two choices: to either get rid of the cat or to move to Sakurasou with it, and he chose the latter. Sakurasou is apparently a separate hostel which houses the more 'troubled' kids of the school, and a lot of negative rumours surround it. Eventually, Sorata moved in and got acquainted with the three existing residents of Sakurasou; Mitaka Jin, a womanizer who keeps several girlfriends at once (some being married), Kamiigusa Misaki, an extremely talented anime-maker who appears to be high on sugar every second of the day, and Akasaka Ryuunosuke, a genius computer geek who develops his own programs and is hardly ever seen leaving his room. 'The Pet Girl of Sakurasou' refers to Shiina Mashiro, who later joins in the story. Shiina is referred to as 'the pet girl' because she hasn't got the first clue on how to take care of herself, and even needed help dressing up in the beginning.

At first glance, this anime seems like a typical shoujo anime, what with its character design and the setting (high school, hostel). Here's the catch though; it's actually seinen.

Honestly, this anime put me through pain. It is also funny and easy to watch. I'm a helpless romantic who is really picky when it comes to my ships, so I was surprised to find a ship I genuinely like here. I absolutely adore Jin x Misaki, so I'm going to include their pictures here for the feels attack.

The other ships are cute as fuck too, but Jin x Misaki just punches me straight in the intestines.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo also has slight ecchi undertones, although it is not a listed genre on both Wikipedia and MyAnimeList. Honestly, it's not really that hard to see the reason why.......

► Good Things To Say About This Anime ◄

1. Every time I find out that a show's target audience is boys, the first thing that comes to my mind is action. I always associate shows for boys with fights and violence. I forget that they too, like girls, might need a Slice of Life show once in a while. A seinen show like this comes by so rarely, and I am grateful for it. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo managed to portray teenage boys discovering themselves while still managing to keep the girls in the spotlight.

2. This anime contains just the right amount of romance. We have a boy who is just learning to love, a boy who never believed in love, and another boy who has been in love for a long time. Although there are three main ships, the romance did not overpower the story to the point where it seems plot-less. Plus, the romance worked perfectly fine for me. It was sweet, and never overwhelming.

3. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo is honest. The characters are honest with their thoughts and feelings. This show exposes us all as human beings. Sorata has admitted to having wished that Shiina would fail to get her manga serialized, because he felt inferior to her despite her being a girl. Jin, despite loving Misaki, said that he would not give up on his dreams and be just a man who loves her because he wants to stand on equal grounds with her. Rita spoke on behalf of all those who quit painting because of Shiina, including herself. Hard work might not always pay off, and it realistically shows how there are people out there who are naturally better than us without having to try. The emotions and conflicts which were featured - although not extremely complex or sophisticated - hit close to home. Assumingly more so if the viewer is a male since they are the target audience.

4. There was one peculiar thing about this anime. If I were to analyse it objectively, three episodes is way too fast to have one character start liking another character. Usually I would have dissed it, because building suspense and chemistry matters a lot to me when reading or watching anything romance-themed. However, this anime managed to work things out. Things didn't feel rushed although objectively, it should have.

5. The friendship and romance went hand-in-hand. There was no need to sabotage one in order to gain the other. The whole thing was executed smoothly and perfectly, and I wouldn't change a single thing about it.

Episode 23 had me bawling my eyes out at two in the morning. I had to go to the washroom to blow my nose because I couldn't breathe.

 Overall rating: 8.2/10

I don't have much complaints about this anime. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo is generally a heartwarming show, and I'm definitely satisfied with how it ended. I recommend this to those who are still in high school or are about to leave high school, and also to those who want to take a break from the fantasy or action genre.
